After looking through Patty’s office, which had nothing useful, we went back to Angelica’s country house. Will and I sat in her study while Angelica and James poured over the evidence we’d procured. It was spread out on her desk.

Wrinkles marred James’s forehead. “I can’t for the life of me work out whose houses those other two are.”

Angelica’s poker face held a note of calmness that was unexpected. She sat back and relaxed into her chair, giving her attention to James. Had she just thrown him a meaningful look? Hmm. “I can’t either.” She picked up the ring from the edge of the desk. “This, however, is something I do know about, and I can’t believe I’m holding it.” Her gaze raked over the jewellery.

I couldn’t wait all day. “So, are you going to enlighten the rest of us?”

She smiled. “Ever the impatient one, dear.” The space in which I expected her to continue was jammed with silence. Her gaze stayed on mine, waiting for me to break.

I gave her what she wanted. “You’re cruel. You know that?”

“Yes, dear. I’m well aware.”

“Argh!”

Will smirked. “Can you please put Lily out of her misery?”

I looked at him. “Oh, so you don’t want to know too?” He shrugged as if he couldn’t care less. He was just as curious as me—how could he not be? He was just better at hiding it. I looked at Angelica. “Since Will and my brother don’t care, maybe you could tell me secretly.”

She chuckled. “Okay, dear. As you wish.”

Will’s eyes widened, and he jutted his chin out. “Hey, that’s not fair.”

“What isn’t fair, dear? I thought you weren’t in any hurry to find out.”

He gave me a dark look, and I grinned. He shook his head. “Fine, I would like to know… please.”

James watched us with a wry smile. “Okay, okay, you got me. I’d like to know too.”

“This is from Egyptian times, and it’s a piece that’s been in witch folklore for as long as I can remember. No one has seen this—or at least no one who wanted people to know—for hundreds of years. The last recorded use of it was in 750 AD when a fellow by the name of Algernon the Usurper used it to raise an army to attempt to wipe out witches. He was a witch, of course, but his followers didn’t know that. He thought if he was the only witch around, he could easily rule the middle and southwest of England, what was then known as Wessex and Mercia. A group of witches banded together to stop him, and they almost failed, but in the end, they brought him down, and after that, the ring vanished. The group hid it and made it their life’s work to make sure it stayed hidden. The protection of this artefact continued through many generations of these witches, until the ring went missing again.” She shook her head slowly. “And now, here it is. The question is, why does Agent Paul have it?”

“And what did he plan to do with it?” James added.
